The USS Maine (1895)

The USS Maine was one of the United States' first true pre-dreadnought battleships. Designed in the era of transition from sail to steam, she was originally designed to also carry sail. After nine years and many design changes, she was commissioned in 1895. A symbol of American sea power and the Great White Fleet, the USS Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba in 1898 as a show of force to Spain.

Her mysterious destruction on February 14 catapulted Spain and the United States into war. The great loss of life and national prestige embodied itself in the Spanish-American War battle cry,"Remember the Maine!"

Originally believed to have been sunk by a Spanish mine, recent evidence has suggested a fire in the coal bunkers. The true cause may never be known.

Model made by Christopher N. Hitchcock for a private collection.
